Update, David Hobby had the Orbis out in the wild for his lastest workshop in the UK. Take a look at some setup shots, and the resulting fill he was able to achieve.

Ah…the ringflash. Could beauty or fashion photography exist without it?

Known for its potential for “shadowless light” and stunning catchlights – a ringflash is a welcome addition to any wedding photographer’s aresenal (think of the images you can create with a simple photo booth setup and one light!). The downside (up till now, has been cost).

Enter the “Orbis Ring Flash Adaptor” – the new kid in town which converts your existing speedlight and TTL cord setup into that glowy donut light we all go crazy for, for the paltry sum of $169 USD.

Feature Hilights (From strobist.com):

  • Introductory Price: $169 US (with $16.99 shipping to US – for other areas see site)
  •  One size fits most all shoe-mount flashes — except the big-headed Vivitar 285, apparently.
  • Requires off-camera sync of some kind (can use off-camera TTL cord)
  • Larger lighting surface area than Ray Flash – (should be softer light, will test soon)
  • First units ship in December, in three weeks

I found this video (from the creator) on YouTube, it should give you a bit of an intro to the types of images you can make with this portable setup, as well as how it performs on a shoot.

I haven’t seen any reviews on the product just yet, I’d like to see if the general community can replicate the images showcased on the Orbis website. If so, then please have Santa fire one down my chimmeny this holiday season!
