I joke that my specialty in photography is shooting “girls in dresses”. No matter what style of photography I try, I always seem to fall back into accentuating beauty and working with people. I’m a people-person and love the collaboration between model and photographer. I’ve been extremely fortunate this year to work with many talented models from around Canada and the United States – some of these frames highlight shoots from Boston, MA to Missoula, MT.

Enjoy!

Underwater Fashion Photography http://www.michaelwarf.com/2009/05/uderwater-fashion-photography/ http://www.michaelwarf.com/2009/05/uderwater-fashion-photography/#comments Fri, 15 May 2009 23:26:38 +0000 admin http://www.michaelwarf.com/?p=39 It promises to be the largest shoot of 2009. A team of 18 athletes, 1 make up artist, 5 models, 1 designer, 2 custom dresses, 1 scuba diver, 1 pregnant lady & 10 photographers will gather at the University of Lethbridge pool to collaborate on everything wet!

The idea started innocently enough as a group of fellow photographers began discussing a photo shoot done for a European triathalon team. What would it take to do something similar in Southern Alberta? Has anyone shot under water before? How do you light it? What are the challenges?

Then a few of us turned the idea into reality. Through luck, networking, and a bit of old fashioned elbow grease – we’ve received permission to use the diving windows this Sunday to coordinate what I belive will be Lethbridge’s largest photographer collaboration of the year. One of the photographers shoots fashion, and was able to have a local designer create two unique peices just for this event. My old business partner has his SCUBA certification, so we will be able to work at longer intervals.

The local paper is ready to cover it, I’m itching to post some of the early frames right from the shoot location. Now if only we could convince a recent bride to trash the dress in the pool!

Stay tuned, big things are coming, look for sample frames early next week.

Orbis Ring Flash Adaptor looks Promising http://www.michaelwarf.com/2008/12/orbis-ring-flash-adaptor-looks-promising/ http://www.michaelwarf.com/2008/12/orbis-ring-flash-adaptor-looks-promising/#comments Thu, 04 Dec 2008 04:11:04 +0000 admin http://www.michaelwarf.com/?p=85 Update, David Hobby had the Orbis out in the wild for his lastest workshop in the UK. Take a look at some setup shots, and the resulting fill he was able to achieve.

Ah…the ringflash. Could beauty or fashion photography exist without it?

Known for its potential for “shadowless light” and stunning catchlights – a ringflash is a welcome addition to any wedding photographer’s aresenal (think of the images you can create with a simple photo booth setup and one light!). The downside (up till now, has been cost).

Enter the “Orbis Ring Flash Adaptor” – the new kid in town which converts your existing speedlight and TTL cord setup into that glowy donut light we all go crazy for, for the paltry sum of $169 USD.

Feature Hilights (From strobist.com):

  • Introductory Price: $169 US (with $16.99 shipping to US – for other areas see site)
  •  One size fits most all shoe-mount flashes — except the big-headed Vivitar 285, apparently.
  • Requires off-camera sync of some kind (can use off-camera TTL cord)
  • Larger lighting surface area than Ray Flash – (should be softer light, will test soon)
  • First units ship in December, in three weeks

I found this video (from the creator) on YouTube, it should give you a bit of an intro to the types of images you can make with this portable setup, as well as how it performs on a shoot.

I haven’t seen any reviews on the product just yet, I’d like to see if the general community can replicate the images showcased on the Orbis website. If so, then please have Santa fire one down my chimmeny this holiday season!
